Glasgow, Mont. – Thick wildfire smoke is blanketing much of northeast Montana tonight, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Dense Smoke Advisory through 6 a.m. Sunday. Drivers and residents across Phillips, Valley, Daniels, and Roosevelt counties could see visibility drop to just one mile at times.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, the smoke is expected to linger overnight, making travel hazardous along U.S. Highways 2 and 191. Motorists are urged to slow down, keep headlights on, and allow extra following distance. The advisory affects towns including Glasgow, Wolf Point, Malta, Scobey, and Poplar.

Those with asthma, COPD, or other respiratory conditions should avoid outdoor activity until conditions improve. Officials recommend keeping windows closed and running air conditioning on a recirculation setting to limit indoor smoke intrusion.

The Lake Wind Advisory for Fort Peck Lake has been canceled, but the smoke hazard remains the more pressing concern for the region. Conditions should begin improving after sunrise Sunday, though additional air quality alerts are possible if wildfire activity continues.
