DES MOINES, IA – The National Weather Service in Des Moines is warning drivers across western and northern Iowa to use caution Thursday morning as dense fog reduces visibility to less than a quarter mile in several locations.
According to the NWS, the fog began forming overnight and will persist into the early daylight hours before gradually dissipating between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Motorists are urged to slow down, use low beam headlights, and allow extra travel time during the morning commute. The thick fog may impact travel on Interstate 35, Highway 20, and other major routes through Denison, Fort Dodge, Mason City, and Spencer.
Visibility maps show the heaviest fog concentrations in north-central Iowa, with gradually improving conditions expected late in the morning as temperatures rise.
Drivers should avoid using high beams, as the light can reflect off the fog and worsen visibility, officials said.
