Merrillville, Indiana – Drivers across northwest Indiana woke up to dangerously low visibility Monday morning as dense fog blanketed the region, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory through 8 a.m. EDT. Patchy fog has reduced visibility to a quarter-mile or less in areas such as Gary, Merrillville, Valparaiso, and La Porte, leading to hazardous travel conditions during the early commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, yesterday’s rainfall contributed to the rapid formation of dense fog across NW Indiana and parts of southwest Lower Michigan. Motorists on I-65, US-30, and local county roads are advised to use low beam headlights and leave extra following distance as visibility can quickly drop below safe driving levels.

Local school districts and public transit agencies have warned of potential delays, while emergency managers in Lake and Porter counties urge residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel until fog lifts. Dense fog of this nature often leads to an increase in minor accidents, especially during the morning rush.

Visibilities are expected to gradually improve after 8 a.m. Monday, but patchy fog could linger in low-lying or rural areas a bit longer. Stay tuned for additional weather updates if advisories are extended.
