Dover, Del. – A tornado is possible across the Delmarva Peninsula Friday evening as severe storms sweep through the region with damaging wind gusts and isolated thunderstorms.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Level 2 (Slight Risk) severe weather zone has expanded northward to include southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and most of Delaware. The main window for dangerous weather runs from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, with the timing and strength tied to the northward reach of a warm front.
Cities including Dover, Salisbury, and Georgetown are in the elevated risk area, where storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph. The risk for a tornado is especially focused on southern Delaware and eastern Maryland, as unstable air and wind shear increase into the evening.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices in advance of possible outages, and avoid non-essential travel during the storm window. Emergency alerts may be issued quickly, so remain weather-aware through the evening.
More updates are expected as the front moves north. Warnings may be upgraded depending on storm development late Friday afternoon.
