Wilmington, Delaware – A warmer-than-normal and wetter weather pattern is expected to take hold across Delaware heading into Valentine’s Day weekend, increasing the likelihood of rain, fog, and slower travel from Saturday through midweek. While no major winter storm is currently indicated, repeated rounds of precipitation could create cumulative impacts on roads, drainage systems, and low-lying coastal areas.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, Delaware is favored for above-normal precipitation and above-normal temperatures during the February 14–18 period. This setup limits the risk for snow while increasing the probability of rain events, especially during overnight and early morning hours when visibility can be reduced.

In northern Delaware, including Wilmington, Newark, and Claymont, milder daytime temperatures are expected to keep most precipitation as rain. Periods of steadier rainfall could lead to ponding on roadways and slower travel along I-95, I-495, and Route 202, particularly during commute windows.

Central Delaware, including Dover and Smyrna, may see repeated rounds of rain with brief heavier showers capable of overwhelming storm drains. Drivers along Route 1 and Route 13 should be alert for water collecting on roadways, especially during periods of persistent rainfall.

In southern Delaware, including Georgetown, Milford, and coastal Sussex County, rainfall combined with snowmelt farther north may increase runoff into creeks and tidal waterways. Emergency management officials advise monitoring low-lying and flood-prone areas, especially near the Inland Bays.

Air travel through nearby regional airports serving Delaware is expected to remain operational, though minor delays are possible during periods of low clouds or heavier rain. Utilities report no elevated concerns for ice-related outages under this warmer pattern.

This warmer, wetter setup is expected to persist into midweek. Additional advisories may be issued as individual systems become clearer, and residents are urged to stay alert for updates, particularly during overnight and early morning travel periods.
