Delaware – A cool, calm start is quickly shifting across Wilmington this afternoon as brighter skies and warmer air push in. Pavement is drying, and temperatures are rising steadily toward a much warmer feel by late day.

According to the National Weather Service, highs will reach near 80°F today with a slight chance of a brief shower between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., and southwest winds could gust up to 25 mph. That combination may create brief slick spots and minor travel slowdowns, especially during the late afternoon drive.

Across Wilmington, Newark, and New Castle County, the real story is the rapid warmup ahead. Temperatures climb to 86°F Tuesday and peak near 89°F by Wednesday under mostly sunny skies. This steady rise will bring a noticeable shift from cool spring air to early summer-like warmth.

Drivers along I-95, Route 13, and I-295 should stay alert for changing conditions today. Gusty winds can impact high-profile vehicles on bridges and open stretches. If a quick shower develops, roads could briefly turn slick before drying again.

By midweek, warmer nights settle in, with lows only falling into the mid-60s. That limited cooling may make indoor spaces feel warmer, especially without ventilation. It is a good time to check cooling systems and stay hydrated during peak afternoon heat.

Conditions remain warm through Thursday near 88°F before easing slightly into the low 80s by Friday. A small chance of showers returns by Sunday, bringing another shift in conditions.

Tuesday: High 86°F, mostly sunny
Wednesday: High 89°F, mostly sunny
Thursday: High 88°F, partly sunny
