Delaware wakes to sharp, biting air that cuts through coats and gloves.
Frost clings to cars and railings as dangerously cold conditions linger this morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. across Kent, New Castle, Delaware Beaches, and Inland Sussex Counties. Wind chill values have dropped as low as 5 degrees below zero, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors.

In Wilmington, temperatures hover near 10°F, while northwest winds push wind chills well below freezing. The cold settles deep near the ground, making short walks feel longer. Early commuters along I-95 and Route 1 face the greatest exposure risk during the morning hours.

Meteorologists warn that hypothermia can develop quickly if precautions are not taken. Residents are urged to limit time outside, wear layered clothing, and protect exposed skin. Hats and gloves remain essential. Extra care is advised for older adults and those without adequate heat.

Conditions slowly improve as the day goes on. Sunshine dominates, and highs recover into the upper 20s by afternoon. Winds ease, helping reduce the sting of the cold. Still, shaded sidewalks and untreated surfaces remain icy in spots.

Looking ahead, a noticeable shift arrives by Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs climb into the upper 30s to near 40°F, marking a brief February thaw. Roads may see melting during the day, followed by flash freezing after sunset as temperatures dip again.

Late week stays quieter. Thursday and Friday bring dry conditions with highs in the mid-30s. Into the 6–10 day outlook, signs point toward above-normal temperatures across the Mid-Atlantic, hinting at a gradual late-winter warmup.

Five-Day Outlook for Wilmington:

  • Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, high near 38°F
  • Wednesday: Partly sunny, high near 40°F
  • Thursday: Partly sunny, high near 36°F
