Wilmington, Del. – Relief from Delaware’s triple-digit heat is on the way — but it comes with a price. By 4 p.m. Thursday, strong storms could sweep into Wilmington, bringing heavy downpours, gusty winds, and the risk of street flooding during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the heat index topping 105°F. But Thursday marks a shift. Showers and thunderstorms are likely between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., with storm chances continuing into Thursday night. Motorists along I-95, I-295, and Route 13 should plan for slick roads and reduced visibility late in the day.
Wilmington and surrounding areas like Newark and Bear could receive up to a quarter inch of rain Thursday evening, with higher totals in thunderstorms. Localized flooding is possible. Winds from the northwest will offer a slight cool-down, with Thursday’s high at 91°F before dipping into the upper 60s overnight.
By Friday, expect partly cloudy skies with a continued chance of afternoon storms and a more comfortable high of 78°F. Scattered storm activity persists through Saturday. Temperatures gradually rise back into the upper 80s by Sunday.
Preparedness Tip: Secure outdoor furniture, avoid low-lying roads during heavy rain, and monitor alerts for any flood advisories.
