WILMINGTON, Del. – Delaware drivers and weekend event planners face a soggy Saturday as showers and possible thunderstorms move in by afternoon. The National Weather Service warns heavy rain and gusty winds could slow traffic on I-95 and delay outdoor plans across New Castle County.

According to the National Weather Service, storms will develop after 2 p.m. Saturday with rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch possible. A few stronger cells could bring brief downpours, lightning, and slick roads. Motorists should allow extra travel time, and anyone attending Saturday sports or festivals should have indoor backup plans.

Temperatures will climb into the upper 80s before storms arrive, adding to the sticky feel. Showers taper late Saturday night, but more rain could linger into Sunday morning. Cooler fall-like air settles in by Sunday afternoon, with highs only in the mid-70s.

Sunday night looks calm with clear skies and lows in the 50s, a welcome break from the muggy stretch. Sunshine returns Monday, starting a dry pattern expected to last into midweek. This shift will bring more comfortable mornings and pleasant afternoons for back-to-school travel and outdoor activities.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates through the weekend, as additional advisories may be issued if storms intensify.
