Dover, Del. – A cooler-than-normal start to March could bring several rounds of rain and occasional wet snow across Delaware beginning Sunday, March 1, with travel impacts possible through Thursday, March 5.

According to NOAA’s 6-10 day outlook issued Monday, Delaware is favored to see below-average temperatures during the March 1-5 stretch, while above-normal precipitation is expected statewide. That pattern supports periods of steady rain with brief rain-snow mixing possible, particularly during the overnight and early morning hours when temperatures hover near freezing.

In northern Delaware, including Wilmington and Newark, heavier bursts of precipitation could briefly mix with wet snow, leading to slushy patches on untreated roads and reduced visibility along Interstate 95 and Route 1. Central communities such as Dover may see primarily rain, though short-lived mixing cannot be ruled out if colder air dips south.

Farther south in Sussex County, including Georgetown and Rehoboth Beach, rain is expected to dominate overall. Ponding on roadways and minor drainage issues may develop if steadier rainfall sets up during the early-week period.

Drivers should stay alert for changing road conditions, especially during the morning commute when surface temperatures are coolest. Allow extra travel time and monitor Delaware Department of Transportation updates as the unsettled pattern unfolds.

This active early-March stretch extends across much of the Mid-Atlantic, with additional refinements expected later this week as the March 1-5 window approaches.
