Wilmington, Delaware – Drivers around Wilmington should brace for dangerous road conditions this afternoon as powerful thunderstorms threaten flash flooding by 2 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Flood Watch is now in effect through late Tuesday night across northern Delaware, including New Castle County. A new round of heavy storms could bring 1 to 4 inches of rainfall, rapidly overwhelming storm drains and creeks.

Travel on I-95, I-295, Route 141, and local roads may become hazardous, especially during the late afternoon commute. Urban flooding is likely, with creeks and streams possibly spilling over their banks. Localized flash flooding is the main threat through midnight, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads and secure outdoor items. If you live in flood-prone zones, have a go-bag and charging plan ready. The heaviest downpours are expected between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.

What’s ahead after the storms? Clearer skies and calmer weather return by Wednesday, setting up a classic July 4th Weekend.
