Bear, Delaware – Heat relief will be short-lived in Delaware as strong thunderstorms move in Thursday afternoon, threatening travel and outdoor plans across New Castle County.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are likely after 2 p.m. Thursday, with a high near 88°F. A southeast wind and tropical humidity will fuel heavier downpours, especially near Bear, Newark, and Wilmington. Rainfall could exceed a quarter-inch in spots, and isolated storms may cause minor flooding — particularly on Route 40 and along I-95 near construction zones.

Thursday night brings continued showers, with a chance of thunderstorms before 2 a.m. Conditions remain humid and unstable, so localized street flooding is possible. Winds out of the east at 5 mph won’t offer much ventilation.

Drivers should expect slick roads and reduced visibility late Thursday. Delay evening travel where possible, especially in flood-prone areas. Residents should secure outdoor furniture and monitor local alerts for any watches or warnings issued.

Friday brings more unsettled weather. A chance of scattered thunderstorms persists through the weekend, with highs in the mid-80s and overnight lows near 70°F. By Sunday, Delaware may see brief clearing — but heat and humidity will return early next week.
