Delaware Pedestrian Killed in Crash on West Newport Pike Thursday

Wilmington, DE – A 64-year-old man was killed Thursday evening in a pedestrian crash that shut down a busy Delaware roadway for several hours.

According to Delaware State Police, the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. September 18, 2025, on West Newport Pike near Rothwell Drive. Investigators said a Nissan Sentra, driven by a 73-year-old Wilmington woman, was traveling westbound when it struck the pedestrian, who had entered the crosswalk. Witnesses reported that the traffic light was green for westbound traffic at the time of the crash.

The victim, a man from Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family is notified. Police confirmed the driver of the Sentra was not injured.

West Newport Pike was closed for approximately three hours while the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated. The roadway has since reopened.
