Wilmington, Del. – Drivers across Delaware and southern New Jersey should prepare for water-covered roads beginning Thursday night as a Coastal Flood Advisory takes effect. The National Weather Service warns that up to a foot of tidal flooding is possible along low-lying areas near the Delaware River and its tributaries, with impacts expected through early Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, the advisory runs from 9 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Saturday, affecting New Castle County in Delaware and Salem County in New Jersey. Forecasters said the most vulnerable roads near tidal waterways could see partial or full closures during high tide cycles.

Minor flooding is likely near Reedy Point along the Delaware River, with tides exceeding one foot above normal levels Thursday night through Friday night. Officials urge residents not to drive through water-covered streets, noting that floodwaters may be deeper than they appear and can quickly damage vehicles.

In Wilmington, conditions will otherwise remain mostly quiet after Thursday morning showers. Sunny skies and highs in the 80s return Friday and Saturday, though localized flooding may still disrupt travel near the riverfront and coastal routes.

The Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until early Saturday morning, with additional advisories possible if water levels rise higher than expected.
