Wilmington, Del. – Air pollution levels across Delaware are rising Saturday as a Code Orange Air Quality Alert takes effect for New Castle County, warning vulnerable groups to stay indoors and avoid strenuous activity.

According to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, fine particle pollution and elevated ozone levels could become unhealthy for children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions. The alert remains active through Saturday evening, with temperatures expected to reach a high of 88°F in Wilmington under sunny skies.

Residents along I-95 and Route 13, where traffic emissions concentrate, are advised to limit outdoor exposure. DNREC recommends avoiding prolonged exertion outdoors, especially during the afternoon peak between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., when ozone levels tend to be highest.

Despite clear skies, the combination of heat and stagnant air could worsen symptoms for those with asthma or other respiratory issues. Officials urge residents to keep air conditioning filters clean, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors during periods of poor air quality.

While Sunday brings more sun and a high of 90°F, moisture increases Monday with a 30% chance of afternoon thunderstorms, followed by heavier storms Tuesday.
