Angola, DE – A fatal two-vehicle collision near Angola claimed the life of a 68-year-old woman and left several others injured Sunday afternoon in Sussex County.
According to the Delaware State Police, the crash occurred around 1:55 p.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Harts Road and John J. Williams Highway. A Honda CRV was traveling southbound on Harts Road when it allegedly failed to remain stopped at a stop sign, entered the intersection, and was struck by a Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer heading westbound.
The impact occurred on the driver’s side of the Honda, where the Freightliner collided after the SUV attempted to turn left onto John J. Williams Highway. A 68-year-old woman from Lewes, Delaware, sitting in the left rear seat of the Honda, was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital. Her identity has not been released pending family notification.
Three other occupants of the Honda were also transported for medical treatment. A 78-year-old male driver and a 36-year-old front passenger, both from Lewes, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A 37-year-old woman from Jersey City, New Jersey, riding in the right rear seat, reportedly suffered critical injuries.
The Freightliner’s driver, a 64-year-old man from Bowie, Maryland, declined medical transport.
John J. Williams Highway was closed for an extended period Sunday while investigators cleared the scene.
