Dover, DE – Delaware residents are preparing for a significant winter storm set to bring heavy snow and hazardous conditions starting Sunday night. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for central and southern Delaware from 10 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Tuesday.
The National Weather Service predicts snowfall accumulations between 5 and 10 inches, with the heaviest snowfall expected Monday morning. A brief mix of sleet and freezing rain is possible Monday afternoon, creating a light glaze before precipitation returns to all snow. Snowfall rates could exceed one inch per hour during peak intensity, especially early Monday.
Travel could be treacherous during the storm, particularly for Monday’s morning and evening commutes. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to prepare for potential disruptions. If travel is unavoidable, ensure vehicles are equipped with essentials such as a flashlight, food, and water. Up-to-date road conditions can be accessed by dialing 511 or visiting Delaware’s Department of Transportation website.
Temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the event, with icy patches likely persisting into midweek. Power outages may also occur, especially in areas where freezing rain develops. Officials encourage residents to have backup power sources and sufficient supplies at home to stay safe.
This winter storm is part of a larger system impacting the Mid-Atlantic region, with significant snowfall expected in neighboring states. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to local weather updates and follow emergency preparedness guidelines.
