Mount Holly, NJ – The National Weather Service is warning of major coastal flooding, damaging winds, and dangerous marine conditions across New Jersey and Delaware from Sunday through Monday, coinciding with the Columbus Day holiday.
According to the NWS Mount Holly office, widespread moderate to major tidal flooding is likely along the Atlantic coast, Delaware Bay, and the tidal Delaware River. Water levels could rise high enough to cause roadway flooding, dune breaching, and beach erosion, with some damage to coastal structures possible during high tides.
Forecasters expect northeast winds gusting up to 60 mph near the coast, with 30–40 mph gusts inland. Gale- and storm-force winds will create seas of 15–20 feet, making marine travel extremely dangerous through Monday night.
Rainfall totals of 1–3 inches are forecast, highest near the coast, which could worsen flooding in poor-drainage or urban areas. Power outages and downed trees are possible, and residents are urged to heed evacuation guidance and stay off flooded roads.
