Dover, Del. – Unhealthy air is expected across Delaware on Sunday as high ozone levels prompt a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for all three counties.

According to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), the alert will remain in effect throughout the day on June 15 for New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties. Elevated levels of ground-level ozone could pose health risks for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory or cardiac conditions.

Residents are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activity, especially during the afternoon when ozone levels are typically highest. DNREC officials recommend staying indoors in air-conditioned spaces and checking on vulnerable neighbors or family members.

Urban areas like Wilmington and Dover may experience higher concentrations of pollution, while coastal communities including Rehoboth Beach and Lewes should also take precautions during peak hours.

This is the second Code Orange alert issued in June, signaling an early start to the region’s summer air quality concerns. DNREC encourages residents to carpool, refuel after dusk, and reduce emissions where possible.

The alert remains in effect until midnight Sunday. Further advisories may be issued if ozone levels remain elevated into next week.
