DeKalb, IL – Northern Illinois University Police are warning students to take extra precautions as scooter thefts rise across campus.
According to NIU Police and Public Safety, officers have noticed an increase in stolen electric and manual scooters in recent weeks. To help prevent thefts, the department released a “Scooter Safety Alert” encouraging riders to lock and document their scooters.
Officials advise students to secure scooters in well-lit, high-traffic areas and attach them to a sturdy bike rack. The department recommends using a U-bolt lock that fits snugly around the frame and wheel for maximum security. Riders are also encouraged to photograph their scooters and register them with the NIU Police Department.
Police urge anyone who notices suspicious activity to contact NIU Police immediately at (815) 753-1212.
The alert reminds students that whether their scooters are electric or manual, proper protection is essential. “Safety is a shared responsibility,” the post reads. “Let’s work together to keep our campus safe—roll smart, Huskies.”
The safety notice comes as more students rely on scooters for quick travel between classes and campus facilities, increasing the need for awareness and prevention efforts.
