Deer Park, IL – A 95-year-old man from Palatine was killed Friday afternoon after his disabled vehicle was struck on Lake Cook Road, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Quentin Road. Moments earlier, deputies had been dispatched to reports of a disabled car in the same area.
According to investigators, the man was driving a 2006 Honda Accord that broke down in a westbound lane of Lake Cook Road. Witnesses told deputies the driver exited his vehicle and began looking underneath it.
As he was under the car, a westbound 2024 Honda HR-V driven by a 30-year-old man from Cary reportedly struck the disabled Honda from behind. The impact caused fatal injuries to the elderly driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The HR-V driver and a 30-year-old woman from Arlington Heights were both taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 77-year-old woman from Barrington, who was a passenger in the Accord, was also transported for evaluation.
A nearby school bus, which was turning onto Quentin Road at the time, was sideswiped but no one aboard was hurt, officials said.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene, and an autopsy is being scheduled. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigations Team.
