Champaign, Illinois – Periods of light snow are expected to affect central and southeast Illinois late tonight through Tuesday, with slick travel conditions possible, especially on untreated roadways.

According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, snow will begin late tonight and continue into Tuesday, impacting areas primarily along and south of Interstate 72. Locations near Danville and areas south of I-70 have the highest chances of seeing accumulation.

Forecasters indicate that around one-half inch of snow is possible in parts of southeast Illinois, while other locations may see lighter amounts or brief snow showers. While totals are expected to remain modest, the National Weather Service cautions that slick spots on roadways are possible, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Snowfall may also result in periods of reduced visibility, especially during heavier bursts late tonight or early Tuesday. Drivers traveling along I-72, I-74, I-57, and I-70, as well as surrounding state routes, should be prepared for changing conditions as snow moves through the region.

The weather service notes that there is no strong signal for heavy snow, though narrow bands could briefly produce higher localized totals south of a Jacksonville-to-Paris line. Most impacts are expected to remain minor but could still affect the morning commute.

Motorists are advised to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution if encountering snow-covered or slick pavement. Conditions may improve as snowfall tapers later Tuesday, though cold temperatures could allow slick spots to linger.

Students, early-shift workers, and commuters traveling overnight or Tuesday morning may experience the greatest impacts due to timing.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring forecast updates and road conditions, as small changes in snowfall intensity or temperature can influence travel conditions.
