JOLIET, Ill. – This week, the globe recognizes World Rabies Day, Will County Health Department is drawing attention to this entirely preventable yet deadly disease. Despite being 100% avoidable, rabies claims almost 60,000 lives worldwide annually. 

In a stark revelation, the department noted that around 60,000 Americans receive postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) shots each year, a crucial step taken after potential exposure to the rabies virus from a suspected animal bite or scratch.
