Washington, DC – Prepare for a stormy start to the workweek in the nation’s capital, as Monday afternoon brings rain, rumbles of thunder, and temps near 80.

According to the National Weather Service, a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms begins after 2 p.m. Monday, increasing in coverage into the evening. Storms could bring brief heavy downpours, gusty winds, and dangerous driving conditions, especially along I-395, I-66, and US-50 during the evening commute.

While Monday morning will begin mostly sunny, conditions will quickly shift by mid-afternoon. Residents across DC, Arlington, and Bethesda should charge devices, delay outdoor plans, and be alert for possible lightning and flash ponding on roads. Winds will be light from the southeast near 5 mph, but sudden gusts are possible in storms.

Monday night will carry another round of thunderstorms, tapering off after 2 a.m. Tuesday. Rainfall could total up to an inch, especially where thunderstorms linger. A 60% chance of precipitation continues overnight.

Looking ahead:

  • Tuesday (High 82°F): Showers and possibly a thunderstorm early, then clearing by afternoon.
  • Wednesday (High 85°F): Sunny and dry — best day of the week.
  • Thursday (High 90°F): Hot and sunny, marking the start of a humid pattern.
  • Friday (High 92°F): Mostly sunny and sweltering.
  • Saturday: A return to rain — expect showers and storms with highs near 86°F.

Stay weather-aware: Thunderstorms remain a risk Monday and Tuesday. The next NWS update arrives early Monday morning.
