Washington, District of Columbia – Roads across the D.C. metro could turn slick within hours as rain flips to snow between 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday, setting up a hazardous Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Monday for the District of Columbia, Prince George’s and Charles counties in Maryland, and much of northern Virginia including Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William counties. Snow totals between 2 and 4 inches are expected, with localized amounts around 5 inches. Northwest winds will gust between 30 and 40 mph overnight into Monday.

The steadiest snow will fall tonight, reducing visibility and quickly covering untreated roads. I-95, I-66 and the Capital Beltway could become slick, especially on bridges and overpasses. Blowing snow may create brief visibility drops during heavier bursts before daybreak Monday.

Officials urge commuters to allow extra travel time and check 511 for updated road conditions. Slow down and increase following distance as conditions deteriorate.

Snow will taper off Monday morning, but gusty winds may continue to cause drifting and isolated slick spots into late morning.
