Baltimore, Maryland – Much of Maryland, northern Virginia, and the D.C. metro will plunge into the teens and single digits tonight as dry Arctic air grips the region, setting up one of the coldest nights so far this winter.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, strong high pressure arriving from the Tennessee Valley will clear skies and drop humidity, causing rapid heat loss overnight. Temperatures are expected to bottom out between 10°F and 20°F in most areas by daybreak Tuesday. Western Maryland could see lows as cold as 5°F, with Cumberland forecast around 9°F.

Drivers and pedestrians should use caution early Tuesday as frost and patchy black ice are likely, especially on untreated roads west of I-81. Staunton, Harrisonburg, and Winchester will see bitter lows near 10°F, while even urban centers like Washington, D.C., and Baltimore dip to 16°F. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, protect pets, and ensure pipes and heating systems are winter-ready.

This dry, cold pattern will persist through midweek, with another round of frigid mornings expected. Wind chills could dip into the single digits again Wednesday.
