Baltimore, Maryland – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the entire Baltimore–Washington region as forecasters warn of plowable snow and significant icing late Saturday through Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, the watch covers much of Maryland, northern Virginia, the District of Columbia, and eastern West Virginia from Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Officials say both snow and ice are possible, with the greatest icing risk expected south of Interstate 66 and U.S. 50.
Earlier Thursday, Winter Weather Advisories were expanded across the Alleghenies through mid-morning as lingering low-level moisture produced light ice on higher ridges. Forecasters warned of slick conditions on bridges, ramps, sidewalks, and other elevated or untreated surfaces, with wind gusts up to 45 mph possible in exposed areas.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the NWS says the approaching winter storm could bring plowable snowfall, significant icing, or a combination of both, depending on small temperature changes. Officials emphasized that impacts may vary sharply over short distances, increasing forecast uncertainty.
Potential impacts include hazardous travel, difficult driving conditions, scattered power outages due to ice accumulation, and disruptions to weekend plans. Residents are urged to use the time now to prepare by assembling emergency kits, monitoring forecasts, and adjusting travel plans if necessary.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to follow updates at weather.gov/lwx and be ready for additional advisories or warnings as confidence increases.
Commuters, families with limited heating options, and those planning weekend travel may be especially affected if conditions worsen late Saturday or Sunday.
