Washington, DC – Thunderstorms sweeping across the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon could dump enough rain to trigger flash flooding in urban and low-lying areas, especially around Washington, Baltimore, and northern Virginia. Heavy downpours may cause creeks and streams to rise quickly, creating dangerous travel conditions by evening.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch is in effect until 9 p.m. for the District of Columbia, central and eastern Maryland, and northern Virginia, including Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are possible, with the heaviest bursts delivering 1 to 2 inches within an hour. Multiple rounds of storms may strike the same areas, increasing flood potential.

Drivers should avoid roads covered in water, especially underpasses and flood-prone intersections in Baltimore, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County. Rapid rises are also possible along tributaries of the Patapsco and Anacostia rivers.

The Flood Watch will remain in place through tonight, with additional alerts possible if rainfall intensifies.
