Winter tightens its grip across the nation’s capital region as the day begins.
Cold air bites at exposed skin, and sidewalks feel unforgiving under early footsteps.

A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. for Washington, D.C., much of Maryland, and northern Virginia. According to the National Weather Service, wind chills have dipped as low as zero degrees and below in spots this morning. The cold creates a real risk for hypothermia if precautions are ignored.

Actual temperatures hover in the teens across the metro area. Light winds still manage to amplify the chill, especially in open areas and along elevated roadways. Anyone heading out early should bundle up, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Conditions improve slowly as the morning progresses. Sunshine filters through increasing clouds, and afternoon highs climb into the low 30s. While the air remains cold, the most dangerous wind chills ease by late morning.

Tonight turns mostly cloudy, with temperatures falling back into the lower 20s. Roads stay dry, but cold pavement remains an issue for bridges and shaded areas.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, a gradual warm-up begins. Highs rebound into the mid to upper 40s Tuesday, then the mid-40s Wednesday, offering brief relief from the February cold snap. Winds pick up slightly Wednesday, adding a brisk feel despite the warmer readings.

Late week stays seasonably cold, with highs near 40 degrees Thursday and Friday. Nights remain chilly, keeping winter firmly in place.

Looking toward early next week, longer-range signals point to above-normal temperatures spreading east, hinting at a slow thaw across the Mid-Atlantic. For now, winter remains in control.
