Melbourne, FL – Coastal communities across east central Florida are under weather advisories today as hazardous marine conditions continue in the wake of Imelda, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne.
Officials warn of breaking surf between 6 to 10 feet, creating a high risk of rip currents from Daytona Beach south through Jupiter Inlet. Moderate beach and dune erosion is also expected, particularly around high tide between 12–3 a.m. and p.m.
According to the NWS, boating conditions will be dangerous, with nearshore seas reaching 9–14 feet and offshore waves up to 18 feet. Winds from the north-northwest are forecast at 20–30 knots, with gusts as high as 35 knots offshore. Small craft advisories remain in effect, and officials urge inexperienced mariners to avoid navigating in these conditions.
Showers will continue to move inland throughout the day, with the best rain chances along the coast. Temperatures will remain in the 80s, with 60% rain coverage in Daytona Beach and around 40–50% chances from Melbourne to Vero Beach. Breezy conditions may bring gusts up to 25 mph.
Residents and visitors are strongly advised to stay out of the water, follow lifeguard instructions, and avoid turning their back on the surf as large waves could sweep people off their feet.
