Melbourne, Florida – Beachgoers along Florida’s east-central coast are being warned of dangerous surf conditions Friday as a high risk of rip currents develops along Atlantic beaches.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, numerous strong rip currents are expected along the Daytona, Space, and Treasure Coast beaches.

These powerful currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, creating life-threatening conditions even for experienced swimmers.

Forecasters say 3 to 4 foot surf and persistent onshore waves are contributing to the elevated rip current risk along the coastline.

Communities including Daytona Beach, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, and Vero Beach are expected to see the greatest risk along their beaches throughout the day.

Officials warn that entering the surf is strongly discouraged, especially at beaches without lifeguards present.

Rip currents can occur even when weather conditions appear calm and sunny, making them particularly dangerous for swimmers who are unfamiliar with ocean conditions.

While beach hazards remain the primary concern, temperatures across east-central Florida are expected to climb into the low to mid-80s Friday, running above normal for early March.

A small chance of isolated afternoon showers is possible across inland communities including Orlando, Sanford, Kissimmee, and Okeechobee, though most areas will remain dry.

Beach safety officials urge visitors to stay out of the water, follow lifeguard instructions, and remain aware of posted warning flags along the coast.

Anyone caught in a rip current should avoid swimming directly back toward shore, instead floating or swimming parallel to the coastline until free of the current.

Conditions may change through the weekend as ocean conditions evolve along Florida’s Atlantic coast.
