Dayton, Ohio – A sharp change in weather swept across Ohio Monday as strong winds and falling temperatures followed record warmth from the previous day, creating much colder conditions and uncomfortable wind chills.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, strong, gusty winds continued through the day Monday, only gradually easing late in the afternoon and evening. Peak wind gusts ranged from 40 to 55 mph, especially during the morning hours, contributing to hazardous travel and rapidly dropping temperatures.

Air temperatures were expected to remain in the 20s throughout the day, with little to no warming during the afternoon. The combination of cold air and strong winds produced very cold wind chills, particularly during the morning.

In Dayton, wind gusts peaked near 50 mph, while Columbus experienced gusts in the mid-40 mph range. Forecasters indicated wind chills near 5°F across parts of central Ohio. In Cincinnati, gusty conditions combined with falling temperatures into the low 20s, creating a stark contrast from Sunday’s record highs.

Farther north, communities including Springfield, Wilmington, and Richmond also experienced strong winds and cold conditions. The National Weather Service noted that the rapid temperature drop occurred behind a cold front that moved through the region overnight.

Officials warned that driving could be difficult for high-profile vehicles, particularly on open roadways where winds were strongest. Loose outdoor objects were also at risk of being blown around by gusts.

Residents were urged to dress for winter conditions, limit time outdoors when possible, and use caution while traveling. The cold and windy conditions were expected to ease gradually later Monday evening.

Commuters, delivery drivers, and outdoor workers were most impacted during the morning and early afternoon hours as winds remained strongest.
