Dayton, OH – Drivers across Dayton, Wilmington, and southwest Ohio are facing dangerous cold and blustery conditions today, with the National Weather Service issuing a Cold Weather Advisory through 10 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, strong west winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph are combining with Arctic air to produce wind chills well below zero, especially during the morning and overnight hours. Wind chills Monday are expected to range from 5 to 12 degrees below zero, with similar conditions continuing into Tuesday morning.
The cold and gusty winds are creating hazardous roadway conditions, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and exposed highways where lingering moisture can quickly refreeze. Drivers traveling along I-70, I-75, I-71, U.S. 35, and U.S. 68 should be prepared for slick spots and sudden drops in vehicle stability, especially for high-profile vehicles affected by strong crosswinds.
Cities impacted include Dayton, Wilmington, Springfield, Xenia, Troy, Oxford, and portions of the Cincinnati metro, where wind chills may remain below zero even during daylight hours.
Officials warn that prolonged exposure to these conditions can lead to hypothermia, particularly if a vehicle becomes disabled. Frostbite is possible on exposed skin in 30 minutes or less.
Drivers are urged to:
- Slow down and allow extra stopping distance
- Secure emergency supplies in vehicles, including blankets and chargers
- Limit unnecessary travel, especially late tonight and early Tuesday
- Dress in layers if traveling or working outdoors
Winds are expected to gradually weaken Tuesday afternoon, with temperatures moderating slightly by midweek. However, officials stress that Monday and early Tuesday present the greatest travel risk across southwest Ohio.
Residents should continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and local road conditions.
