Dayton, Ohio – A significant winter storm is expected to impact the Miami Valley this weekend, bringing heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions, especially on Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, an initial round of light snow will begin Saturday afternoon, mainly north and south of Interstate 70, and continue into Saturday night. A second, more intense round of moderate to heavy snow is expected to develop before daybreak Sunday and persist through much of the day.

Forecast snowfall totals across Dayton and surrounding communities are expected to range from 8 to 12 inches by the time the storm ends Sunday evening. Snowfall rates could exceed 1 inch per hour at times Sunday, particularly between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., making travel extremely difficult.

Forecasters also note a low-end potential for sleet or freezing rain early Sunday morning, mainly south of the Ohio River. While any mixing could limit snow totals in those areas, it may increase the risk of slick, icy roads.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel Sunday, prepare for rapidly changing road conditions, and allow extra time if travel is unavoidable. Conditions should gradually improve late Sunday night.
