Nashville, TN – A Nashville woman is facing vehicular homicide by intoxication and child endangerment charges after a single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon that killed her 11-year-old son, according to Metro Nashville Police.

According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 13700 block of Old Hickory Boulevard in Davidson County, when a GMC Yukon traveling east failed to negotiate a slight curve in the roadway.

Police said the driver, Elizabeth Sanchez, 49, allegedly drove through a wooden fence before the vehicle traveled approximately 300 yards across a field and crashed into a drainage ditch. Investigators reported no signs of braking at the scene.

Sanchez was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Her son, who was seated in the back of the SUV, was taken to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

According to police, Sanchez admitted to medical personnel that she had consumed beer prior to the crash. First responders also reported detecting an odor of alcohol on her breath and person.

Authorities said Sanchez will be arrested on outstanding warrants once she is discharged from the hospital. The investigation remains ongoing.

The incident has prompted renewed warnings from officials about the dangers of impaired driving—especially when children are passengers.

Anyone with additional information related to the crash is encouraged to contact Metro Nashville Police.
