Lexington, NC – With Halloween just days away, Davidson County Sheriff Richie Simmons is reminding residents to keep safety top of mind as children and families head out for trick-or-treating across the county.

According to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, families should plan ahead by checking local sex offender registries and mapping safe routes for children. Sheriff Simmons emphasized that visibility and adult supervision are key to keeping little ghosts and goblins safe this Halloween.

Parents are urged to choose bright or reflective costumes, ensure masks don’t obstruct vision, and inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it. Deputies also warn families to avoid homemade treats and to visit only well-lit homes.

Drivers are asked to slow down and stay alert for children crossing the streets. “Halloween is one of the deadliest nights of the year for pedestrians,” the sheriff’s office stated. Motorists should keep headlights on, avoid distractions, and obey North Carolina’s texting and driving laws.

Residents who prefer to hand out candy are encouraged to keep porches well-lit, remove tripping hazards, and hand out only sealed, pre-packaged treats.

“Halloween should be fun, not frightening,” said Sheriff Simmons. “Let’s all do our part to make sure the only scares this year are from the decorations.”

For additional information, residents can contact Sergeant Chris Azelton at the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit at (336) 242-2138.
