Davidson County, NC – A routine traffic stop in Lexington this week led to the arrest of a Denton man after deputies allegedly discovered a concealed firearm inside his vehicle, according to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, detectives with the Traffic and Criminal Enforcement (T.R.A.C.E.) Team conducted a traffic stop on Wednesday, December 11, on Conrad Hill Mine Road involving a 2013 BMW. During the stop, detectives searched the vehicle and located a concealed firearm.

Authorities identified the driver as Avery Allen Markham, age 30, of Denton. Investigators said Markham is a convicted felon and was taken into custody at the scene.

According to deputies, Markham was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. He was also cited for driving while his license was revoked and for expired vehicle registration.

Following his arrest, Markham was transported to the Davidson County Jail, where he was placed under a $10,000 secured bond. Jail records indicate he is scheduled to appear in court later this month in December.

The traffic stop and arrest occurred as part of the sheriff’s office’s ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at reducing criminal activity and improving roadway safety throughout Davidson County. The T.R.A.C.E. Team focuses on proactive traffic enforcement that often leads to the discovery of illegal weapons, drugs, and other violations, officials said.

Under North Carolina General Statute 15A-532, judicial officials — not law enforcement — determine the conditions of pretrial release, including bond amounts.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
