Davidson County, NC – Deputies with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office say a welfare check Friday morning led to a double homicide investigation on Raye Drive in Winston-Salem.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies arrived at a residence at 360 Raye Drive around 10:30 a.m. on October 17, 2025, after a family member reported receiving a disturbing text message from Stephen Curtis Hicks, 78, indicating he had harmed relatives.

When deputies arrived, they received no response at the door. After finding an unsecured entry, they went inside and discovered the bodies of June Hicks, 76, and Stephen Eric Hicks, 45. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities also found Stephen Curtis Hicks inside the home with minor self-inflicted injuries.

Hicks was taken into custody without incident and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He remains held at the Davidson County Detention Center, with an initial court appearance scheduled for Monday, October 20, in Lexington District Court.

Detective P. Love is leading the investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said the case appears to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
