Davidson County, NC – A months-long narcotics death investigation has led to an arrest in connection with a fentanyl-related overdose death, according to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division began investigating in May 2025 after an adult was found deceased inside a residence in Davidson County. The death was initially believed to be the result of a drug overdose.

As the investigation continued, authorities identified Michael Anthony Moore, 42, of Winston-Salem, as the individual who allegedly distributed the narcotics to the victim. Following the completion of an autopsy and toxicology testing, officials determined the cause of death was fentanyl toxicity, investigators said.

On Wednesday, January 29, an arrest warrant was obtained charging Moore with Death by Distribution, a felony under North Carolina law. The following day, Thursday, January 30, Moore was arrested in Winston-Salem with assistance from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, according to authorities.

Moore was transported to the Forsyth County Detention Center, where officials confirmed he was given no bond due to being on pretrial release for unrelated narcotics charges at the time of his arrest.

The sheriff’s office also emphasized that bond decisions are determined by judicial officials, not law enforcement, under North Carolina General Statute 15A-532.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The investigation remains part of ongoing efforts by local and regional law enforcement agencies to combat fentanyl distribution and overdose deaths across Davidson County, the Piedmont Triad, and North Carolina.
