Davenport, Iowa – Very windy conditions are expected to impact eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois from Sunday afternoon through Monday as a strong cold front moves through the region.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph are forecast to develop Sunday afternoon, with gusts reaching 50 mph. Forecasters warn that isolated gusts up to 55 mph are possible, particularly late Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening when the strongest winds are expected.

The high winds may coincide with areas of accumulating snow, increasing the risk of blowing and drifting snow, especially Sunday afternoon and night. While snowfall amounts may be limited in some locations, reduced visibility could still create hazardous driving conditions, particularly in open areas and along north–south roadways.

The National Weather Service highlights that high-profile vehicles, including semitrailers, delivery trucks, and vans, may have difficulty maintaining control in strong crosswinds. Travel could be especially challenging on exposed highways and bridges.

In addition to travel concerns, residents are urged to secure loose or unsecured outdoor items, including holiday decorations, garbage containers, and lightweight furniture, which could be blown around or damaged by strong gusts. Power outages are not expected to be widespread but cannot be ruled out if gusts reach the upper end of forecast values.

Winds are expected to remain strong into Monday before gradually diminishing later in the day as the pressure gradient relaxes behind the departing system. Colder air will follow the front, potentially allowing any remaining moisture on roads to refreeze.

The National Weather Service advises residents to stay updated on forecast changes, use caution when driving in windy conditions, and prepare for rapidly changing travel conditions through early Monday.
