Davenport, IA – A fast-changing weather system is expected to move through eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois today, bringing morning rain, strong afternoon winds, and a sharp temperature drop that could create hazardous travel by the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, light rain will continue through mid-morning Wednesday, with most areas picking up 0.10 to 0.25 inches. Rain chances peak between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., with wet roads likely during the morning drive.
Forecasters say attention quickly turns to strong northwest winds and falling temperatures. Wind gusts are expected to reach 40 to 45 mph from midday through Wednesday evening across the region, including Davenport, Moline, Bettendorf, Rock Island, Iowa City, and Cedar Rapids. These winds may produce brief, low-visibility snow showers during the afternoon.
Temperatures will drop sharply behind the cold front. In Davenport, readings fall from the upper 30s around noon into the 20s by early evening, then into the teens overnight. Wind chills by late tonight and early Thursday morning are expected to reach -3° to -5° across the Quad Cities metro, with colder values north of Highway 20.
The National Weather Service warns that any remaining moisture on roads could turn icy as temperatures drop below freezing late today. Drivers should watch for slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor decorations, protect loose objects, and use caution when driving high-profile vehicles during peak wind gusts this afternoon and evening.
