Davenport, Iowa – A wintry mix including freezing drizzle is expected to develop late tonight into early Friday morning across parts of the Quad Cities region, potentially creating slick travel conditions during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, areas in the northeastern portion of the forecast area have the highest likelihood of seeing freezing drizzle or a light wintry mix. Overnight temperatures are expected to range between 27 and 30 degrees, cold enough for untreated surfaces to become icy.
Forecasters caution that while precipitation amounts will be light, even minor icing can create hazardous conditions on bridges, overpasses, and lesser-traveled roads. Slick spots are most likely late tonight through mid-morning Friday, particularly along major travel corridors including Interstate 80, Interstate 74, Interstate 280, and nearby state highways.
The National Weather Service estimates a 20 to 50 percent chance of wintry precipitation late tonight into Friday morning. Conditions should gradually improve as temperatures rise later in the morning, ending the freezing drizzle threat.
Outside of the early wintry mix, Friday is expected to be windy, with a mix of clouds and sun following the passage of a cold front. Despite the morning icing risk, no significant winter storm impacts are anticipated.
Looking ahead, temperatures will remain near seasonal levels Saturday, with highs generally in the 20s and 30s, before trending warmer Sunday and into next week. Dry conditions are expected to dominate after Friday morning.
This weather setup may affect early-morning commuters, school transportation, healthcare workers, and delivery drivers, particularly those traveling before mid-morning.
Drivers are advised to reduce speeds, allow extra stopping distance, and check local road conditions before heading out Friday morning. Residents should continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service overnight as conditions develop.
