Davenport, Iowa – Strong winds and near-70 degree warmth will peak along the I-80 corridor by 4 p.m. Friday, creating elevated fire danger before a sharp cooldown and snow chances arrive this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, temperatures will surge into the upper 60s to near 70 degrees Friday afternoon across eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Southwest winds will increase throughout the day, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph along I-74, I-80 and US-61. The combination of dry vegetation, low humidity and gusty winds may allow fires to spread rapidly, especially in open fields north of the Quad Cities.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning Friday and properly secure trailer chains when traveling. A single spark could ignite dry grasses and spread quickly under strong wind gusts.

Conditions change quickly Saturday as a cold front sweeps across the Mississippi River Valley. High temperatures will fall back into the 30s and 40s by afternoon, marking a temperature drop of more than 30 degrees compared to Friday’s peak. Cloud cover increases through the day, and snow chances develop primarily north of I-80 by Saturday night.

By Sunday morning, lows dip into the upper 20s to mid-30s across Scott, Rock Island and Clinton counties. While widespread heavy snow is not expected at this time, brief periods of snow could create slick spots on bridges and overpasses, especially along I-280.

Drivers should monitor updates through Saturday as timing of the cold front may shift. Additional advisories could be issued if fire weather or weekend snow threats intensify.
