Davenport, Iowa – Southwest wind gusts up to 35 mph will combine with warm, dry air along the I-80 corridor from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, creating near-critical fire conditions across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, temperatures will surge into the upper 50s and 60s Friday afternoon while humidity levels drop and winds strengthen out of the southwest. The highest fire danger will focus across much of eastern Iowa southeast of a Manchester-to-Vinton line, as well as northwest and west-central Illinois and northeast Missouri.

These conditions can allow grass and brush fires to ignite easily and spread rapidly, particularly in open fields along I-74, I-280 and US-61. Any spark from machinery, trailer chains or discarded cigarettes could quickly grow out of control under gusty winds.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged Friday, and residents should follow all local burn bans. Farmers and contractors using outdoor equipment should use extra caution during the peak wind window this afternoon. Drivers are also urged to secure trailer chains to prevent roadside sparks.

Winds will begin to ease after sunset Friday evening, reducing the fire threat overnight. However, dry vegetation will remain in place until meaningful rainfall returns.

Officials emphasize that Friday afternoon presents the greatest wildfire risk window. Additional statements or fire weather advisories may be issued if humidity levels fall lower than expected or wind speeds increase further.
