Snow is moving into southeast Iowa early this morning and will continue spreading east and north through 9 a.m., according to a Saturday update from the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities. With pavement temperatures already below freezing, forecasters warn that snow will accumulate quickly, leading to deteriorating road conditions during the morning commute.

The agency reports that the snow will be dry and fluffy, with accumulation rates up to one-half inch per hour through the early morning. Additional increases in snowfall rates—potentially approaching one inch per hour—are possible after 9 a.m., which may further worsen travel if bands intensify.

A road-conditions map released with the update shows several counties already experiencing partially or completely covered roads shortly after sunrise. As snowfall spreads northeast toward the Mississippi River and into northwest Illinois, more widespread coverage of slippery roads is expected. Reduced visibility may also affect travel, particularly on rural routes and open stretches of highway.

Drivers are encouraged to check current road conditions before heading out and to slow down when encountering snow-covered surfaces. The Weather Service advises leaving extra stopping distance and ensuring windows and lights are cleared due to patchy early-morning accumulation.

The snowfall arrives as temperatures remain below freezing across the region, increasing the likelihood that even light snow will bond to pavement. While the update focuses on short-term impacts through the morning hours, forecasters note that conditions will continue to evolve as the storm advances.
