Darlington County, SC – A Darlington County woman has been arrested after deputies say she allegedly attempted to suffocate a 1-year-old child Monday afternoon.
According to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call on Timmonsville Highway in the Darlington area on November 4, 2025. Investigators determined through witness and suspect statements that the suspect allegedly tried to suffocate the child before being stopped by a witness who immediately called 911.
Deputies identified the suspect as Sugjaria Kennedy, who was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder and Unlawful Conduct Toward a Child. She is being held at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing later this afternoon, officials said.
Sheriff James August thanked the witness for their quick action, crediting their courage with preventing a tragedy.
“It is through the courage and cooperation of individuals like this that we are able to protect our community and prevent future incidents,” August said. “Your voice matters; if you see something, say something.”
The case remains under active investigation, and no further details have been released.
