Darlington, SC – A Darlington County inmate who was mistakenly released from custody earlier this week is now back behind bars, according to Sheriff Michael B. August.

According to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), Christopher Ryan Freeman was sentenced on January 14, 2026, to five years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections for grand larceny involving $5,000. The sentence was suspended to three years. However, the Darlington County Detention Center (DCDC) accidentally released Freeman the same day, despite having the proper sentencing paperwork on file.

Authorities learned of the mistake on Friday, January 16, and promptly made contact with Freeman. The sheriff’s office confirmed that Freeman voluntarily surrendered on Saturday, January 17, and is now being held at the Darlington County Detention Center pending transfer to state corrections officials.

Sheriff August stated that the department has launched an internal investigation into how the error occurred and will review all policies and procedures to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

“An error of this nature is unacceptable,” August said in a statement. “We are committed to identifying and addressing any underlying issues revealed through this review.”

Freeman remains in custody as of Friday afternoon.
