Darlington County, SC – Deputies arrested a man late Monday night following a violent domestic incident in the Hartsville area of Darlington County.

According to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence on Ashland Road around 10 p.m. on September 29. Upon arrival, officers found a victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital, while the suspect allegedly fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.

Authorities said the suspect, identified as Melvin Justin Atkinson, was located hiding inside a vehicle near Clyde School Road. Deputies tracked him down using drones, K-9 units, and bloodhounds with assistance from the Hartsville Police Department and Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Atkinson was arrested and charged with attempted murder, burglary in the first degree, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. During a bond hearing Tuesday, a Darlington County Magistrate denied bond on the attempted murder charge, set a $40,000 bond on the burglary charge, and $15,000 bond for the weapons offense. Atkinson is being held at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center.

Sheriff Michael August credited the multi-agency cooperation for the quick capture, emphasizing the importance of law enforcement collaboration for community safety.
