Chicago, IL – A Darien man has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash on the Stevenson Expressway, Illinois State Police announced.
According to authorities, 60-year-old Joseph Hathaway faces charges of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence Involving Death and Aggravated Driving Under the Influence – Fourth Offense, both Class 2 felonies.
The crash occurred early Sunday at approximately 3:08 a.m. on Interstate 55 southbound near Interstate 294 in Indian Head Park. Police said a white Toyota taxi was rear-ended by a silver Acura in the center lane. The Acura became disabled and was subsequently struck by a black Kia SUV, allegedly driven by Hathaway. The driver of the Acura was pronounced dead at the scene, while the taxi driver was hospitalized with serious injuries. Hathaway was also hospitalized.
On Monday, Illinois State Police presented the case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, which filed charges against Hathaway. He was taken into custody and is being held pending his first court appearance.
