Danville, IL – A cleanup crew in Danville’s Ellsworth Park sparked a police investigation Saturday morning after discovering a bone they believed could be human remains.

According to Danville Police, officers were dispatched around 10 a.m. on September 20, 2025, after the find was reported. Responding officers treated the scene as if human remains had been located and began an investigation.

Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services also responded, while an archaeologist with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources was called in to examine the bone. After review, officials determined it was an animal bone and not of human origin.

Police said no further information will be released at this time.

The discovery briefly raised community concerns in Vermilion County before officials confirmed there was no public safety threat. Ellsworth Park, located in east-central Illinois, remains open following the incident.

Residents with additional questions are encouraged to follow official updates through the Danville Police Department.
